What Will Others Think

Feb 13, 2023

"What will others think"

A simple statement yet large hurdle.

When I coach leaders this statement comes up quite often. Why they don't speak up during meetings, ask for support or begin crucial conversations.

What I have realized through years of training is that everyone has something going on. Some large and rough seasons, others busy and distracted. Someone's view of you (what you say or do) is a small moment in their day. Perceived through a combination of their past experiences and emotion at that very point in time. They could be having a great day and be on board or a bad day and paint you in a whole different light. Your job title, clothing, generation and many other factors play into how they intake your action that has nothing to do with you and everything to do with them.

Here are 3 things to ask yourself to overcome this hurdle:

  1. Does it come from a place of service. If you will be speaking your mind or action in a new path...is it because, based on facts not story, it's beneficial to so many others.
  2. What is your 'why' behind such statement or action. If you don't know it, how will others rally behind it.
  3. Focus on the desired outcome. By staying silent or inaction, does the situation get worse or better.
