What's the Story?
Oct 01, 2024Did you know your subconscious influences 95% of your actions. That shocking statistic drives me to check my story often to destress. Otherwise I create my own battle on reality.
Let's break this concept down a little further on how the story feeds your ego, creating your own stress and practical steps you can take today to re-route.
Our lives are shaped by the narratives we create about our experiences. These stories influence our perceptions, decisions, and actions.
Often, they are driven by our ego, which can lead us down paths that either uplift or hold us back. Recognizing and managing these stories is crucial for maintaining a positive, productive mindset.
Positive Narrative: When you tell yourself empowering stories, you focus on your strengths, achievements, and potential. This narrative drives you to take confident, proactive steps, fostering growth and resilience.
This doesn't have to be toxic such as pushing down any non-positive emotions like it didn't happen. It means to focus on the reality of the situation and not create 'extra' pieces to the story causing your own pain.
Negative Narrative: On the other hand, a story filled with self-doubt, fear, or past failures can paralyze you. It might lead to hesitation, missed opportunities, and a decline in mental well-being.
Practical Tips to Keep Your Story in Check:
Awareness: Regularly reflect on your thoughts and the stories you're telling yourself. Journaling can help you identify patterns in your narrative.
Question Your Narrative: When you notice a negative story, ask yourself: - Is this thought based on facts or assumptions? - How would I view this situation if I were more compassionate towards myself? - What evidence contradicts this negative thought?
Reframe Your Story: Transform negative narratives into positive ones by focusing on solutions and lessons learned. Instead of "I failed," try "I learned a valuable lesson."
Mindfulness and Meditation: These practices can help you stay present and reduce the influence of negative thoughts. They create a space for you to observe your stories without judgment. An area without influence from others.
Seek Feedback: Sometimes, an outside perspective can provide clarity. Share your thoughts with a trusted friend, mentor or third party coach who can offer a balanced view.
So there are narratives running around in your mind with a main objective to feed the ego. Grabbing proof that you're right, others wrong. These stories will cause your own stress. A battle on reality that ultimately everyone loses.
We talk about this concept in programs - keeping a check on the stories we narrate, the characters we choose and actions in play.
The first step is to stay curious why your actions came to be - bring it to consciousness so it has less control.
