Unlimited PTO: Re-Thinking Work, Not Just Time Off

Feb 10, 2025

The idea of Unlimited PTO often sparks debate. Some see it as the ultimate workplace benefit, while others assume it’s a recipe for lost productivity and chaos. But is that really the case? Or is it time we rethink the way we approach time off, trust, and workplace performance?

The Myths Holding Companies Back

Despite the growing adoption of unlimited PTO, many organizations hesitate to implement it due to persistent myths:

"Employees will abuse it."

Reality: Studies show that employees with unlimited PTO actually take more managed schedule approach than when they had the traditional policy.

"It’s too expensive."

Reality: Traditional PTO policies require companies to pay out unused vacation days. With unlimited PTO, there’s no accrued liability, making it a cost-effective option. Employees are also approaching work more proactively and productively to take time off which the organization is gaining more outcomes.

"It leads to decreased productivity."

Reality: When implemented properly, unlimited PTO boosts employee well-being, engagement, and retention, leading to higher productivity in the long-term.

How Much PTO Do Employees Actually Take?

Employees with unlimited PTO take an average of 2 days more off per year, compared with traditional PTO policies. Most employees don’t exploit unlimited PTO.

For unlimited PTO to be successful, organizations need to rethink their work environment, expectations, and leadership approach:

Encourage a Culture of Rest & Recharge

Leaders must lead by example—taking time off themselves and actively encouraging employees to do the same.

Define What Success Looks Like

Set clear performance metrics and expectations. PTO should be outcome-based, not hours-based.

Normalize Open Conversations About Time Off

Remove the stigma around taking leave by discussing time off openly and ensuring team coverage plans are in place.

Unlimited PTO isn’t about giving employees endless vacations. It’s about trust, accountability, and results over micromanagement. When done right, it leads to higher engagement, reduced burnout, and a more energized workforce. Watch more here: Unlimited PTO: Rethinking Work, Not Just Time Off
