Approach People Strategy Like Products

Jul 01, 2024

We shouldn't treat people like products, but what if we approached strategic people management in a similar way we approach our products?

I come from the manufacturing industry. A lot of time, investments and teams go into making sure quality product goes out the door. Some of these steps can be applied to how we approach our workforce:

Quality - Do we have people in the jobs in which their skillset and workstyle thrives? The more they can use their strengths, pulling that natural energy, the higher quality and productivity you will get.

Development - 5S, lean initiatives, improvements to make an even better product. What about people? There are people I meet that have never been to a training course, conference, trade show or part of a group within their trade. How will they improve without some support. How will they improve without time to focus on increasing their skillset.

Process improvement Remove waste toward more effective meetings and value-add functions. What tasks actually need to be done to run your business and what is being done because "we've always done it this way." Where is there double-duty work. Where can all the advancements in technology help your team get back time in their work week.

Prevention or Preventative Maintenance - You know the limits of your machines, product materials, lubricant change outs. Do you know the limits of your people? How do you support them to understand this line and prevent crossing it. We will take care of our vehicles and homes more than we take care of our own selves.

Where to start? Training and development on: space (time management), genuine conversations (communication), professional development (workshops, coaching, groups in their professional discipline).
