Leadership Foundations to Consider
Mar 28, 2022When becoming a leader or looking at your skill upgrades, it's a sea of opportunities. That can be overwhelming to navigate. After reflecting on my own leadership journey and leaders I coach, it came down to the basic foundations of leadership. Look to discover, explore and establish actions in the three areas below and it will be hard to head in the wrong direction on your development journey:
Expectations
Expectations your boss has for you and your official role within the organization. Expectations from the team you serve. Expectations of yourself, limits and lines you won't cross. How will performance be measured for all parties involved. What type of checkpoint meetings will need commitment in order to view progress or re-route when needed. What does each person value and how can you honor those needs. Identify current hurdles and how each member, including yourself, can work on overcoming and preventing in the future. What is priority and align across everyone involved.
Tasker to Manager
The biggest mistake companies make when promoting from within is only looking at skillset in the particular function an employee excels at today. They need to take into consideration the soft skills of leadership. This person will be moving from the tasks they are proficient at into people management, a whole different type of work. Some areas to review are:
- Commitment of time to the people you serve
- Engagement and team building
- Balance including how to delegate
- Self-awareness actions and where you need to grow / change
- What skills as a leader need improvement and what is the plan
What's Your 'WHY'
Money during a promotion is temporary motivation. That's why it's important to set the foundation strong. Revert back to the key foundation points often. Use it to re-energize and prove progress in the growth journey. Reflect and observe often enough to know when a re-route is needed as you are too astray from the foundation.
