Finding Your 'Flow State'

Apr 04, 2025

Finding something "just for you" was difficult for me during my burnout recovery. As I explored who I am without obligations (work/parenting) and distractions...I found as an adult I had lost my identity.

I enjoy the outdoors but live in the Midwest—stuck inside half of the year. So, I found learning guitar to be my indoor hobby but battled practice time with daily demands. My partner, who is a musician of 20+ years, was my guide on this part of the journey—intentional space for a hobby as a busy adult. Finding joy in the messy middle, trusting the process of creating sounds into music.

Through this self-growth process, I also found "Flow State," which taps into a deep energy of humans being IN THE ZONE. Where you don't have to push, it feels natural to be there...in deep focus. This eventually led to the WORKFLOW category in the Workforce Energy Management model within my business.

How to Get Into a Flow State:

  1. Choose the Right Activity – Pick something that challenges you but isn't overwhelming. It should be engaging enough to keep your focus but not so difficult that it creates frustration.

  2. Minimize Distractions – Set up a space that limits interruptions. Put your phone on Do Not Disturb, use noise-canceling headphones, or create a specific environment that signals let's get into it.

  3. Set a Clear Goal – Whether it's playing a song on an instrument, writing for 30 minutes, or solving a problem, having a clear intention helps keep your mind engaged.

  4. Let Go of Perfection – Flow state thrives in progress, not perfection. Release the pressure to "get it right" and allow yourself to enjoy the process. That's where the magic happens...in the messy middle!

  5. Notice Your Energy Peaks – Align deep work or creative time with when you naturally feel the most alert and energized during the day.

Many people in programs enjoy the WORKFLOW category because it taps into a part of us that has been put aside in these busy times. But when made a priority again, it feels so right. Deep, creative space to innovate and get things done versus just another activity, another task.

As adults, it can be easy to lose yourself in this ever-demanding world. Find your thing. Not work, obligations, or distractions. Your thing, just for you. Find your flow state...be intentional to protect that space.
