Align Work with What Drives

Mar 24, 2025

Motivation is often seen as something we have to push for—external rewards, incentives, or sheer willpower. But what if the key to a highly engaged and energized workforce isn’t about pushing at all? Instead, it’s about tapping into the natural internal motivators that drive each person. When people operate from their natural energy source, work doesn’t feel like a drain—it becomes something they want to do.

This is where the behavioral science behind DISC and its six internal motivators come into play. Understanding what fuels your team members not only boosts productivity but also fosters a work environment where people feel aligned, valued, and genuinely engaged.

The Power of Internal Motivation

When employees align their work with their core drivers, they experience less stress and more fulfillment. Instead of struggling to stay engaged, they naturally bring their best to the table. As leaders, HR professionals, or team members, recognizing and supporting these motivators can transform workplace energy.

In the DISC framework, six internal motivators influence how people take action and make decisions. While I go into more depth in my video (linked below), here’s a brief overview:

  1. Knowledge – Fueled by learning and understanding. These individuals thrive when they have access to new information and opportunities to grow or can use their previous experiences.

  2. Utility – Driven by efficiency and results. They engage best when they see a clear return on effort and resources or completion of the task.

  3. Surroundings – Motivated by harmony, creativity, and balance. When given space to create and work in an environment that aligns with their values or objectives they shine.

  4. Others – Energized by helping and serving others. Their best work happens when they see the positive impact they have on people.

  5. Power – Driven by personal achievement, leadership, and independence. Give them autonomy and room to innovate, and they’ll take ownership of success on their own or collaborative with peers.

  6. Methodologies – Motivated by structure, process, and consistency. They thrive when there’s a clear framework and purpose to follow or be receptive to.

How to Apply This in Your Workplace

Recognizing these motivators isn’t just about understanding people—it’s about making strategic decisions in how you communicate, delegate, and support your team. Here are a few quick hacks:

  • Personalize roles and responsibilities to align with natural motivators.

  • Frame tasks in a way that connects to what drives each individual.

  • Provide the right incentives—for some, that’s recognition; for others, it’s autonomy or structured progress.

  • Create an environment where everyone’s energy is valued—balance efficiency with creativity, structure with flexibility, and teamwork with independence.

When motivation is no longer a battle but a natural alignment, engagement flows. A workforce operating in its natural energy zone isn’t just productive—it’s thriving.
